    El Aluvión de Chañaral

Last March heavy rains fell on the mountain range north of Chañaral, Chile. The mudslide that ensued was unprecedented in its magnitude and destruction. More than twenty residents lost their lives as much of the town was swept into the ocean. Orlando, one of the survivors, shared his story with us.

“It took everything from us, but we’re still here…I’m just so grateful that God gave me another opportunity to live.” In his eyes were hope, faith, and determination. The Chileans are accustomed to overcoming natural disasters: earthquakes, tsunamis, mudslides. Somehow they always find the strength to get back up.

It is sad that he lost what he had with what happened-sad to know that what they worked for goes away like that.
